At the final defense, you will begin by making a short public seminar presentation about your research (30-45 minutes).Remember that since the committee members have already read your dissertation, you need to highlight the importance, significance, and originality of your work.

These aspirational goals (listed below) are intended to encourage students’ growth and development.

A candidate for a doctoral degree is expected to demonstrate mastery of knowledge in the chosen discipline and to synthesize and create new knowledge, making an original and substantial contribution to the discipline in an appropriate timeframe.

The program is designed to prepare you with knowledge and skills in six core competencies: The Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership (EDL) program coursework consists of four components: core courses, courses within a designated concentration, research methods courses and the dissertation in practice.

In the first year of the program, you will complete core courses that reflect USC Rossier’s mission and the program purpose.

The purpose of the dissertation in practice is to equip you with the knowledge and skills you will use to address existing problems in your workplace well beyond your completion of the program.

Format options for the dissertation in practice vary by concentration.Students will be asked to discuss topics for their dissertation in face-to-face meetings with the programme convenors, and to prepare a dissertation proposal by the start of term 2.In term 2, students will be allocated dissertation supervisors.all of the committee members have signed the document, the Graduate Adviser must sign the form before you submit it to the Graduate School.In the event that you cannot get the signatures from one of the committee members, the Graduate Adviser or your supervisor may sign by proxy on their behalf, provided that you produce documentation from this committee member indicating that 1) they have received your dissertation and 2) they will attend your oral defense at the prescribed time.If you are in ETC you may email Lauren Thompson to reserve a room.Be sure you send your dissertation title, abstract, date, and time of defense in to the Graduate Coordinator so a public notice of your defense can be posted as is required by the Office of Graduate Studies two weeks prior to the defense date.In addition, you must reserve a room for the defense.Students usually hold their defense at their primary research location.These courses focus on developing or deepening your understanding of the way power and privilege play out in education in urban settings, leadership and learning to perpetuate inequities in learning opportunities.Subsequent coursework will build on this foundation and align with your career objectives.
