Start your pet topic with something you're interested in (science and medicine for me) then branch out from there, that way you don't get bored. Subscribe to r/news, r/worldnews, r/politics and whatever other subs you find interesting.
Then get friends who have other pet topics and share with them, that way everyone benefits. I started right before the year's 2nd exam, was a little rushed but just nice. Keep yourself up to date by the hour with current affairs. I was consistently in the top quarter in GP just by doing this.
