But up there in the Cosmos an inescapable perspective awaits. By itself, I think this fact more than justifies the money our species has spent in sending ships to other worlds.

It is our fate to live during one of the most perilous and, at the same time, one of the most hopeful chapters in human history.

We have found that scientific laws pervade all of nature, that the same rules apply on Earth as in the skies, that we can find a resonance, a harmony, between the way we think and the way the world works…Those worlds in space are as countless as all the grains of sand on all the beaches of the earth.

Each of those worlds is as real as ours and every one of them is a succession of incidents, events, occurrences which influence its future.

Sagan to the next event, my friend asked me "Say how many hamburgers do you think Mc Donalds has sold?

The Cosmos is all that is, or ever was, or ever will be.Education on the value of free speech and the other freedoms reserved by the Bill of Rights, about what happens when you don't have them, and about how to exercise and protect them, should be an essential prerequisite for being an American citizen… I posted this under another username a few years back, but it gives a bit of insight into the man and, well, repost. I was working as an AV nerd with my friend at the Sundance Film Institute in Utah and they were hosting an international conference on greenhouse gas emissions with soviet scientists. Sagan was there and being the kind of guy he was, he made himself available to anyone who wanted to talk to him, even lowly help like me and my friend. The fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. a way of skeptically interrogating the universe with a fine understanding of human fallibility. We live in a society absolutely dependent on science and technology and yet have cleverly arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us that something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then we’re up for grabs for the next charlatan, political or religious, who comes ambling along. Standing over humans, gods, and demons, subsuming Caretakers and Tunnel builders, there is an intelligence that antedates the universe. He is known for remarking how people were made of "star stuff." And, by the by, he was right: H → He → Li → Be → B → C → N → O → F, and on through various nuclear processes that synthesize the elements up to iron (Fe) — and it takes a supernova (or a particle accelerator! Sagan was also very interested in extraterrestrial life, including UFO sightings (though he was a skeptic on the matter); he heavily promoted the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. In 1974 he was enlisted by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) to lead the attack at their conference debunking the theories of Immanuel Velikovsky. Our contemplations of the Cosmos stir us — there is a tingling in the spine, a catch in the voice, a faint sensation as if a distant memory, of falling from a great height. We know we are approaching the grandest of mysteries.Countless worlds, numberless moments, an immensity of space and time.Which aspects of our nature will prevail is uncertain, particularly when our visions and prospects are bound to one small part of the small planet Earth.
